The collaborating institution is the Xiamen Rare Earth Materials Research Center of the Hainan Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Xiamen Rare Earth Materials Institute), a research institution jointly built by the Hainan Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Xiamen Municipal Government. This new R&D institution mainly focuses on research into clean production and environmental remediation of rare earth elements, nano-biotherapy using rare earths, rare earth energy storage materials, functional rare earth materials, luminescent rare earth materials, separation and purification of rare earth elements, rare earth catalytic materials, functional rare earth additives, and special rare earth alloys. Currently, it has two academicians, 16 senior-level talents, 19 associate senior-level talents, and over 100 core researchers.
The research team is led by Researcher Song Lijun, comprising one full professor, five associate professors, two senior lecturers, and fifteen graduate students. In recent years, the team has focused on the high-value utilization of rare earth elements, targeting the main battlefield of application and industrial transformation. By leveraging the unique properties of rare earth elements due to their special 4f electron configuration, they have developed new functional compounds and oxides to endow polymer composites with enhanced functionalities, expanding their application scenarios and fields, and effectively promoting the industrial upgrading and replacement of functional materials. The team has long been engaged in the high-value utilization research of rare earth functional additives, undertaking multiple projects including the Central Government-guided Local Project in Fujian Province, the Ministry of Science and Technology's Key Special Project for Science and Technology to Boost the Economy in 2020, and the Xiamen City Industry-University-Research Collaborative Innovation Project. Relevant projects include the Central Government-guided Local Project "Key Technology Research and Industrial Demonstration of Long-lasting UV Resistance in Polyamide Resin," the Fujian STS Project "Research and Industrialization of Rare Earth Blended Flame Retardant and UV-Resistant Eco-Integrated Wall Panels," the Xiamen Platform Project "UV-Resistant Polymer Films," and the Xiamen Industry-University-Research Project "Surface Doping of CeO2 Composite Modified Biaxially Oriented Nylon 6 Films."
